University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center, 193 Clarks Cove Road, Walpole, will host a talk by Dr. Darien Mizuta of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Laboratory in Milford, Connecticut, on Wednesday, June 12, 6 p.m., in the library classroom on the upper campus.

The presentation, “In situ feeding performance for shellfish culture,” will describe how shellfish filtration is affected by local environmental factors such as temperature and food quality and quantity. Mizuta will review techniques and considerations for evaluating sites for shellfish aquaculture, with reference to Maine sea scallops.

Local growers will have an opportunity to learn about the NOAA Milford Laboratory, which has a history of support and collaboration with the shellfish industry of the Northeast, and to meet staff members, including director Dr. Gary Wikfors, Mark Dixon, Dr. Shannon Meseck and Dr. Skylar Bayer (formerly at the Darling Marine Center). Dr. Seabom Sohn, East Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Gangeung, Korea, will also be there. There will be time for discussion and networking.
