Maine author and historian Jeffrey Ryan will talk about his soon-to-be-published book, “Hermit: The Mysterious Life of Jim Whyte,” in the Community Room at Rockland Public Library on Thursday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. Based on a true story, “Hermit” depicts a tale almost too fantastic to be believed. When Jim Whyte settled outside the slate quarrying town of Monson in 1895, people hardly knew what to make of him. Almost 130 years later, mysteries remain. A world traveler who spoke six languages fluently, Whyte arrived in Monson with sacks full of money and a fierce desire for privacy. It was clear Whyte was in hiding — the FBI eventually came looking for him. But no one could imagine how Whyte, who lost everything when World War I broke out, amassed another fortune before he died.
