Maine, coming in at number nine, is in the top 10 states that are most dependent on the federal government, according to the research and personal finance website WalletHub.com.

The site used data from the Census, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the IRS and other sources to determine where each state ranks in respect to its return on taxes paid to the federal government, share of federal jobs, federal funding as a share of state revenue and the share of federal contracts and grants. The report finds that so-called “red states,” which generally vote for Republican candidates, on average rank more than 13 points higher than “blue states” in their level of dependency on the federal government.
